How strict is the word count limit for the UC essays?

If my combined word count for the UC essays is closer to, say, 1200 words, will this be particularly harmful to my chances of getting accepted?

The application system may prevent you from submitting your application if your word count is off by that much. Use contractions to shorten your essay and review the content to remove necessary information.
