How to get sims 2 downloads onto the game for use?

I have tried to put the item into the folder My Documents\\EA Games\\The Sims 2\\Downloads and went onto the game but it didn't show up on the sims 2 game. I have tried it with a car and have got it to work but downloading hair onto the game doesnt seem to work. Could anyone help?

please check your hard drive my cousin tried to do that but it didnt work so he had to check the hard drive and than it worked
